How does Google handle duplicate content and what negative effects it can have on rankings from SEO perspective?

Duplicate content means considerable blocks of content within or across domains that either match other content fully or partially.

It is important to know by looking at the content, something like 25% or 30% of all the content of the website is duplicate content. So, duplicate content usually happens.

Sometimes people used to quote some lines from other blog and will give a link to it. So, it is understood that it is not always duplicate content, but it is spam. If we consider it, the changes will affect the search quality instead of helping it. So, Google looks for duplicate content and they group it together and treat it as one.

Whenever Google makes an attempt to give search results, if they found two pages that seems to be similar, instead of showing both pages even though they are duplicates, Google will show one of those pages in search results. As you scroll down to the bottom of the search results and you still want to do deeper search and if you alter the filters, you can see another page which seems identical.

Most probably, duplicate content is not always treated as spam, but it is treated as something to be collected. Ensure that it ranks accordingly. Now if you do duplicate content, you are doing it in abusive, fraudulent or malicious or manipulative way , so Google has the right to take action on spam.
