Is it essential for every single page within my website to have unique metatag description?

Meta tag description means 160 character snippet used to outline the content of a webpage. With the help of these snippets, Search engines help visitors to know what that page is all about.

So the creator of a webpage can either have unique meta tag description or no meta tag description at all. But all you need to realize is not to have a duplicate meta tag description. In case, if you register the site in free Google Webmaster Tools console, they will find out if there is any duplicate meta-tag description. So it is better to avoid.

It's not much important to have unique meta-tag description for every single page of the website. But it is better to have unique one for home page, pages that have more important return on investment, pages that have your featured products or may be for some pages which have really bad automatically generated snippets. Google always try their best, but they does not claim to have perfect snippets every time. In these sort of situations, you must ensure that you have unique, handcrafted, lovingly made meta-tag description.

In simple words, one can have unique ones for the pages that has real importance instead of repeating the same one for every single page on the website. Or opt it out to Google to have snippets for you, but really don't go for the duplicate ones.
